Worship at Amazing Grace: A Primer Welcome to Amazing Grace Lutheran Church! Whether you are a long-time member or a first-time visitor, this page is designed to give you more background and understanding into what happens at worship here at Amazing Grace. You are not just attending or visiting Amazing Grace; you are guests. Guests of whom? God is the host here; the communion table is not the Amazing Grace table, it is God’s table. Please know that everyone here (even if they happen to be long-time members of the congregation), are guests—welcomed and invited guests. So, take part in whatever you wish. The items, decorations, and colors used in the worship space reflect the season of the church year we are currently observing. The seasons include: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost. Amazing Grace also uses themes to focus worship, so the items you see might also relate to the theme of the day/month/season. Everything you will need for worship is in the worship booklet. Generally we have some gathering prayers, followed by a gathering hymn. We then exchange a sign of Christ’s peace with one another (usually a handshake and the word “peace”). Once everyone is seated the pastor will say a word or two about the theme of the day and mention a few matters about which we will pray during the service. These prayers have to do with grief, illness in body and mind, broken relationships, war, etc. They also concern the joys we experience—the birth of babies among other things. This is followed by readings from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and New Testament, and the sermon. Sometimes at Amazing Grace, we will use creative means--images, music, drama--to deliver the sermon, instead of a more traditional style. Then an affirmation of faith (when we say the things we believe), prayers, and offering. The offering is not an intermission—it is the part of the worship service when we respond to God’s amazing generosity (amazing grace) through our own generosity. Our offering goes to the ministries of Amazing Grace itself, and to other ministries globally and locally. An appropriate use of this time might be to consider ways in which we can serve others (i.e., you need not put cash in the basket!). On Sundays when we celebrate Holy Communion, the great thanksgiving (in Greek, “Eucharist”) comes next. The words (“In the night in which he was betrayed …”) are from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. The pastor will give some instruction for receiving communion (for the benefit of those who have not attended Amazing Grace before—and there are almost always some in that situation). We form circles of 30 or so around the altar, pass the bread from one to another, and say the words, “body of Christ, given for you.” The pastor and communion assistants move along the circle with the wine saying, “blood of Christ, shed for you.” When everyone in the circle has received communion they join hands. The pastor says a prayer, and they are seated. The next group comes up. Again, everyone is welcome and invited to participate. The service concludes with an announcement of mission opportunities, including a word about any special opportunities related to the season. Then a sending (blessing) and sending hymn, and we are on our way. Whenever you can join us, we are glad to share in worship with you. This is a reverent yet informal group of people. Go with the flow, don’t be concerned about making mistakes, ask for assistance if you want it, have fun.Introduction written by Larry Jorgenson and Katie Yahns
